The first golf tournament of the calendar year and the second oldest national Open in the world, the BMW SA Open hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni, teed off at a pristine Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg this morning.

Graeme Storm beat Rory McIlroy in a play-off to win the 2017 edition.

The year 2018, however, promises to be an entirely different kettle of fish with the likes of Hennie Otto, George Coetzee, Dylan Fritelli, Dean Burmester, Louis Oosthuizen, Brandon Stone, Ernie Els, Hayden Porteous, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel, and of course defending champ Graham Storm, among others, that took to the tee box.

Although some players were yet to complete the course at the time, Chase Koepka, younger brother of 2017 US Open Championship winner Brooks, took an early one-shot clubhouse lead during a low-scoring first round at Glendower.

The American carded one eagle, seven birdies and two bogeys to post an impressive seven under par 65 at Glendower Golf Club.

Player host Ernie Els finished on one under for the day, where he carded four birdies and three bogeys, while compatriot and two-time US Open champion, Retief Goosen, rolled in five gains but also picked up two dropped shots to register a 69.

On the course, South African duo Branden Grace and Richard Sterne made excellent starts at two under after the opening two holes.
