IEC confirms 20 arrested for double voting in KZN | News Article

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that twenty people have been arrested for double voting.

This after reports of voters who have attempted or apparently been able to remove the indelible ink on their thumbs.

The indelible ink is one of a number of security checks and safeguards built into the election process.

According to The Citizen, the IEC will undertake to conduct an urgent audit in order to ascertain where double votes may have taken place.

This was announced during a press briefing at the Tshwane results operation centre (ROC) on the first day after voting.

May 8 was inundated with reports of irregularities, namely the easily removable indelible ink that has been used as a safeguard over the years to prevent voters from voting more than once.

“The purpose of the audit is to determine the extent of the phenomenon,” explained the Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo.
