Biff set for full-time CSA role | News Article
Graeme Smith - Cricinfo

Former Proteas captain, Graeme Smith, is set to be appointed as the full-time Director of Cricket for Cricket South Africa within the next week.

The former opening batsman has been the acting Director of Cricket since the end of last year, however, he was only available to serve in the position up until the 2020 Indian Premier League due to prior commentating commitments during the T20 competition on the subcontinent.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has seen the situation somewhat with the IPL being postponed for now, while a total cancelation is certainly not off the table.

On Tuesday morning the action CEO of CSA, Dr. Jacques Faul, confirmed that an offer had been made to Smith for a full-time position and that the negotiations are at an advanced stage.

Faul added that an announcement can be expected within the next week.

“We are final negotiations will Graeme and we hope to make an announcement next week. I don’t think that the IPL influences it in any way, and there are some other considerations.

“We are in an advanced stage with the negotiations and hopefully we can make an announcement next week.”

Smith conceded that his short tenure in the role it is difficult to assess his contribution thus far,

“It is very difficult to assess in such a short space of time. Some aspects have been good and in some aspects, there has been a lot of learning. One of the most important things over the last few months was to understand what was in place, and why it was in place and what was the strategy of some of the decisions that were made in the past.

“Then to assess all of that and to formulate a way forward. There has been a huge amount going from a commercial perspective, contracting, getting our teams to perform well across the board. This is only at the Proteas men and women level, but also at under-19 level as well.

“There has been a huge amount of learning over the last few months and I feel that I am probably in a good place to look to implement some stuff. Maybe to debate some strategies going forward. Now that we are moving into the financial new year we can maybe look to improve a few things on the cricket side.

“If everything works out the way that we hope it does, I hope that in this uncertain time we will be able to put out a team for the 20/20 World Cup and that the Proteas men will be successful. By next summer we would also like to have an idea of who our leading 45 players are to take the Proteas forward into the future.”
