The Proteas have named their squad for the tour of Australia next month which will include a warm-up match, three One-Day Internationals, and one T20 International.

The all-rounders, Chris Morris, and Farhaan Berhardien have received recalls, while the seamer, Dwaine Pretorius, also makes a return.

They will be replacing Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Wiaan Mulder who will all not be touring due to injury.

The opening batsman, Dean Elgar, has not made the cut for the tour, but that does not mean it’s the end of the road for him.

The convenor of selectors, Linda Zondi, did tell OFM Sport that, he didn’t really have enough opportunity to impress, however, for players such as Elgar, the time is starting to run out to stake a claim at a spot in the World Cup squad.

“Dean Elgar is a guy that hasn’t got a good record in our franchise white-ball cricket, but when you look at his record in county cricket in England he has done well.

“It was a no-brainer for us to bring him in and to give him an opportunity because we are going to England and he is familiar with the conditions.

“The question is, is two games enough, or do we need to give him more games? Yes, we do know what he can offer, but it is also important for us to look at the other guys as well and give them an opportunity.

“For me, if the guys didn’t perform against Zimbabwe, how are they going perform against a team like Australia who is a strong opponent.

“We also definitely an eye-opener for us in terms of the guys who have been given an opportunity. Australia is primarily going to be the last opportunity we will be giving guys, because we need to start shortening the list of players for the World Cup.”

Australia and South Africa face each other in Perth on 4 November in the 1st ODI.

Proteas ODI squad - Faf du Plessis (captain), Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn.
