The VKB Knights earned their first win of the season on Wednesday with a five-wicket win over the Dolphins at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.

The Knights bowled the team from Durban out for 135 runs on day three of the Domestic 4-Day series clash.

Sarel Erwee top-scored for the Dolphins in their second innings with a knock of 33 runs, while Calvin Savage contributed with 27 runs.

The Proteas fast bowler, Duanne Olivier, was the chief destroyer with the ball for the Knights with his four wickets for 35 runs in 13.2 overs. But, it was Ottniel Baartman who caused the most damage on day three with his three wickets for 30 runs in 9 overs. He claimed the scalps of Erwee, the Proteas wicketkeeper, Dane Vilas, and Sibonelo Makhanya.

The Knights were set the target of 138 runs for the win, with more than a day and a half to spare.

The Knights chase wasn’t without its hiccups after the early wickets of Grant Mokoena, Keegan Petersen, Pite van Biljon and Patrick Kruger saw the hosts limping at 60/4.

The opening batsman, Luthando Mnyanda, held the innings together with a fine knock off 60, while the veteran all-rounder Ryan McLaren supported him well with 40 runs not out.

Rudi Second, who was playing in his 100th first-class match was also unbeaten with a contribution of 4 runs. It was somewhat fitting that the wicketkeeper hit the winning runs with a boundary.

The left-arm spinner, Senuran Muthusamy, was the pick of the Dolphins bowlers with three for 30, while Savage took two wickets for 19 runs.

The Knights next game in the competition will start on Monday, 22 October, when they face the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
