AB retirement a huge World Cup blow─── MORGAN PIEK 10:36 Thu, 24 May 2018
The former Proteas fast bowler and assistant coach, Allan Donald, believes that the shock retirement of AB de Villiers could have an impact on the Proteas chances of winning the ICC Cricket World Cup next year in England and Wales
This came as a surprise as De Villiers previously indicated that he still wanted to play one more World Cup and possibly win it.
Speaking to OFM Sport from London, Donald, says that a Proteas team at the World Cup without De Villiers in a big deal.
“He will undoubtedly one of the greatest that have ever graced the cricketing world.
“I just think that not only the talent but also his humility will be missed. His leadership on the field will also be missed, and there is no doubt about that.
“Next year’s World Cup will be very, very interesting. This has just put a huge dent, and I’m not saying in South Africa’s chances, but a Proteas team in the World Cup without AB de Villiers is a huge thing.
“He is a big thing. It is a huge, huge loss, in terms of what you lose in the field with the bat, the leadership etc.
“So, this whole thing really is a big deal, and it’s a shame really. It is what it is. There comes a time in any professional sportsman’s career, where we just feel that it is time to go.
“I read that he says he is tired, and that is exactly what happened to me. Everything just comes out of you, and you just have nothing more to give.”
The Proteas face England in just more than a year from now at The Oval in London in the opening match of the World Cup.
