The Proteas left-arm seamer, Wayne Parnell, has welcomed the competition within the squad ahead of tomorrow’s ICC Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan.

Parnell took a beating in his first five overs against Sri Lanka at Lords on Saturday, conceding 45 runs in that spell.

He did bounce back well to concede just 9 runs in his last five overs as they beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs.

The seamer said that they have reached a level in the team where players are comfortable with playing as well as being dropped for specific games.

“There’s always going to be pressure from that perspective, but having said that I think we’re at a stage where everyone is comfortable with playing and also with having to sit out at various times.

“We’ve also sort of developed a culture of playing horses for courses, so it’s more about what’s needed for the next venue than the guys’ actual performance.

“We’ve seen guys come, do well and get left out and also vice versa.

“So it’s not based on performance but horses for courses, obviously everyone wants to do well.”

The Proteas face Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham tomorrow and this match gets underway at 14:30.
