Two of four suspects who escaped from holding cells in North West are still on the run.

It’s alleged on Sunday (8/12) that the men escaped forcing their way through the roof of a holding cell at Swartruggens police station.

Mpho Madito (29), accused of four cases of rape, was re-arrested yesterday (10/12) whilst hiking along the N4 near Swartruggens plaza, and another escapee has been detained today (11/12).

“Police followed up on information that Madito boarded a bus that was on its way to the Rustenburg CBD from Tlokweng Village,” said North West police spokesperson Adelé Myburgh.

“The visible policing unit and the flying squad managed to locate the bus at Boshoek and a search of the bus led to the arrest of Madito. He will appear in court for escaping from lawful custody and for being in possession of suspected stolen property.”

The men who are still on the run are Thapelo Molebatsi (25) and Johannes Mfaladi (28). Both were initially arrested in Swartruggens, Molebatsi for alleged assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and Mfaladi for alleged theft.

“The police is working hard to trace and re-arrest the remaining two escapees,” said Myburgh.

“Investigation into the matter including circumstances that led to the escape, continues.”

The re-arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Swartruggens Magistrate’s court on Wednesday (11/12) and Thursday (12/12).

Police request anyone with information to contact the nearest police station on 0800 10111 or investigating officer, captain Peterson Monageng on 082 569 5868.
