Two dead, 30 injured as bakkie overturns near Kestell─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:22 Sun, 01 Dec 2024
A couple died in an accident after a bakkie allegedly transporting initiates overturned on the R57 road between Kestell and QwaQwa in the Free State.
The driver and his wife died while 30 others sustained injuries of which eleven are in critical condition. Free State Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said Emergency Services were alerted to the scene at approximately 09:00 on Saturday (30/11). The bakkie transported boys to an initiation school in QwaQwa.
Injured patients were taken by Government EMS and ER24 to the Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Hospital in QwaQwa, Elizabeth Ross District Hospital in QwaQwa, and Busamed Private Hospital in Harrismith.
‘Cause of accident is yet to be determined’
Mvambi said at Elizabeth Ross Hospital 12 patients between 18 and 29 years were admitted to the casualty ward with minor injuries.
He said at Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital 15 patients between 17 and 37 years were treated. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.
