"We want to say let our communities be protected, let them be safe wherever they are."

As we open a new chapter and look forward to a new year, several well-known people and political leaders in our footprint have wished the public a blissful year filled with joy and blessings.

Taking into account the increased number of lives which have been lost on the roads during this time of the year, it comes as no surprise that safety and security in South Africa are topping the wish list of many as we are about to say goodbye to 2023.

Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, took the opportunity to thank residents for supporting the provincial leadership as they continue with their attempt to change things around. He appealed to the people of the Free State to exercise a great deal of discipline and responsibility, particularly regarding alcohol consumption and road safety.

“Let us remember that this period is meant for us to relax, reflect and spend time with our loved ones. This particular period of the year is often characterised by torrential rains, so let us be careful on the roads.”

The Free State Health MEC, Mathabo Leeto, reiterated the importance of safety within communities especially after the recent rife of abduction of women in the Free State. Leeto said this at the gender-based violence (GBV) march which was held in Bloemfontein this week.

“We know that the festive season is a time when families are coming together, friends are coming together to exchange gifts, but we want to say let our communities be protected, let them be safe wherever they are. Let us promote neighbourhood watch so that when your neighbours are not at home, you become their eyes to check what is happening and you report to the police.”

“We want to call upon everyone to be safe and stay together because when we live together and love one another, we will be able to see wonders. So we are saying to you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” she said.

Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul, also took the opportunity to thank residents for their support and prayers throughout 2023.

“As we wrap up the year, we look forward to entering 2024 with a renewed spirit of working together with our communities to build a modern, growing and successful Northern Cape for the benefit of its people. Remember to be safe on our roads during this time, obey the rules of the road and don’t drink and drive.”

North West Education MEC, Viola Motsumi, also wished the public a blissful festive season filled with love. Police have also been busy with roadblocks and other operations to ensure the safety of people travelling during this period.
