ANC FS distances itself from Matjhabeng mayor's remarks | News Article

The ANC in the Free State deems the derogatory remarks by the controversial Matjhabeng Mayor to coloured people in Bronville in Welkom as reckless and unfortunate.

The party's spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says the party wishes to distance itself from Nkosinjani Speelman's embarrassing behaviour. This after he used derogatory remarks denoting the coloured community on Monday while addressing members of SANDF on the 21 days of national lockdown due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Meeko adds that whilst the ANC notes his apology, the party is embarrassed by his conduct of classifying people according to what he says is Apartheid stereotypes. OFM News previously reported that the national spokesperson of Cope, Dennis Bloem, said his party will approach the Grasfontein Police Station in Pretoria to open a case of crimen injuria against Speelman.

Meeko says Speelman's insinuations on 'skop en donner' contradicted those of President Cyril Ramaphosa who made it clear that the mandate of the military is not to "skop en donner".

"The Provincial Executive Committee’s Officials will act accordingly by summoning comrade Speelman to give a full account and a way forward will be determined, for his conduct has the potential of endangering the hard-fought gains of our revolution.

"The divide and rule tactic was an Apartheid philosophy against the unity of the people in an effort to undermine our collective objective of defeating all manner of class, race, tribe and gender chauvinism," he adds.

Meeko says the party urges all its members and people to act in a manner which strengthens national efforts to defeat the coronavirus pandemic.
