Spiritual leader Credo Mutwa is being laid to rest in Kuruman in the Northern Cape today.

He has been afforded a provincial special official funeral. Mutwa died last week at the age of 98.

He was a storyteller, playwright, and a poet. The Department of Arts and Culture announced that when Mutwa died, it had already organised annual lectures that were scheduled to kick off from March 20, in honour of his legacy.

The lectures were, however, postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak in South Africa. The Department, in a statement, further described him as an advocate of life, health, culture and spiritual wellness.

He is said to have also played a vital role in the preservation of traditional knowledge and in South Africa’s liberation struggle.

Premier Zamani Saul has expressed his sadness at the loss of Muta, stating that his passing is a great loss to the province.

He added Mutwa will be remembered for his spirit of Ubuntu and fostering social cohesion and cultural diversity.
