#Coronavirus: NW tally increases to 9 | News Article

The MEC for Health in the North West, Madoda Sambatha, has urged residents to adhere to the national 21-day lockdown in the country.

This follows the arrest of at least 200 people who contravened the national disaster act by ignoring orders from the authorities of no movement. The province has again seen a rise in the number of people testing positive for the virus, increasing the total from 8 to 9. The provincial health department spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, tells OFM News that the Bojanala District Municipality, which includes Rustenburg, has a total of  6 cases. The latest person to test positive for the Covid-19 is also from the district which has the highest occurrence in the province.

Lekgethwane says the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, which includes Potchefstroom, has  1 confirmed case, Ngaka Modiri Molema, which include Mahikeng, has 1, and the Dr Ruth Segonotsi Mompati, which include Bloemhof, also has 1 confirmed positive case.

The department in the province has further urged residents to stay home, wash hands and avoid crowded places while maintaining a social distance. Meanwhile, the Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, on Wednesday evening 1 April 2020 briefed the media on the launch of mobile units in Gauteng.

He also announced that so far 1380 people have been infected by the virus with 5 deaths having been reported so far. Mkhize also said that in light of the increasing incidence of local transmission, there will be enhanced door-to-door testing and increased deployment of community healthcare workers. This follows a statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that 10 000 healthcare workers would be deployed to rural areas and cities to embark on a massive scale of screening for Covid-19.
