Future of NW ANC councillors hangs in balance | News Article

The future of ANC councillors who orchestrated the removal of the Lekwa-Teemane Munincipal Mayor with opposition parties, including the Forum 4 Service Delivery (FS4D), through a vote of confidence in the North West, hangs in the balance.

This, as the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) will meet with all ANC councillors deployed in the local municipality today. Spokesperson for the party's IPC, Kenny Morolong, has described the move by ANC councillors as the highest form of ill-discipline. He says the action has the potential to sow division and bring the organisation into disrepute. Morolong says under no circumstances should members of the ANC be tempted to vote with the opposition against one of their own without an organisational directive.

"Whilst the removal of the Mayor constitutes improper conduct by ANC councillors, the allegations levelled against him are grave and warrants an investigation. Accordingly, the IPC will develop a framework through which these allegations will be tested," he adds.

In September 2019, Matlosana Municipal mayor, Maetu Kgaile was sent packing in an embarrassing 44-0 vote of no confidence against her when 15 ANC councillors voted with the DA and EFF, among others. But shortly after the removal of Kgaile, all 15 ANC councillors who voted with the opposition parties were summoned to the party structures in Mahikeng to explain their decision to vote Kgaile out.

Later on, in a dramatic fashion, a task team led by the national party's deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte, saw Kgaile reinstated.
