An 8-year-old boy has drowned in a river in Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State on Saturday, 18 January, bringing the death toll due to drowning incidents in Central South Africa, to three in just one week.
According to police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, the boy and his 10-year-old brother were fetching water from a river in Mandela Park when the incident happened. Makhele says the boy's parents were informed and the police have launched an investigation.
OFM News recently reported that on Friday, 17 January, police in the Free State reported that the body of a 10-year-old boy was retrieved from the Witherow Quarry in Heidedal after a search was launched by the community. On the same day, the body of 13-year-old Enoch Mpianzi from Parktown Boys' High School was found in the Crocodile River after he drowned during a school camp at a lodge in the North West.
