A total of 127 schools achieved a pass rate of 98% and above in the Free State.
One of the new editions to this category was the Heatherdale Secondary School in Heidedal, Bloemfontein, that obtained a 100% pass rate. Free State MEC Tate Makgoe said it was evident this year that male learners performed better than their female counterparts.
He said this could be because boys could have extended study hours till late at night as opposed to girls due to safety reasons. This is despite the fact that the top four spots in the province were claimed by girls.
Announcing the top 10 performers, Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe said when looking at them it was clearly a battle between the Motheo and Thabo Mafutsanyana districts from where the majority of the performers came from.
Top achievers received bursaries, tablets and laptops from several sponsors.
