Tips for motorists during heavy rain, floods | News Article

In South Africa, the month of December is often known to be the rainfall season. After the recent drought, the recent weeks were evident of this as heavy rain started pouring down, causing parts of South Africa to flood.

With this being said, the North West Provincial Government cautions motorists about safety during heavy rain and wet roads.

Tip 1: Slow down - you should always drive at a slower speed when roads are wet.

Tip 2: Brake earlier and slower – when you need to slow down or stop on wet roads, ease on the brakes earlier and with less force than you would normally.

Tip 3: Turn on your headlights. Even if just a few raindrops are falling. Not only will this help you see the road, but it will help other drivers to see you.

Tip 4: Keep an eye out for pedestrians. In a rainstorm, a pedestrian’s view of the road could be obscured by their umbrella, which means they may accidentally step into the road at the wrong time.

Tip 5: Pull over if the rainfall is too heavy. If the rain is falling so hard that you can barely see the car in front of you, pull over and wait for the rain to slow down or stop

OFM News reported on Friday 6 December that Northern Cape residents in Upington took to social media, posting images and videos of cars and buildings that have been submerged in water because of the flooding.

While on 9 December, on the N12 road near Klerksdorp in the North West, eight motorists were rescued and the abandoned cars were taken to a place of safety after they became stuck on the flooded road. Meanwhile in Pretoria, Gauteng, News 24 reported cars and busses were left submerged in water and several roads and business have been affected.

The South African Weather Services warns residents to note that more heavy rain is expected in Gauteng, the North-Eastern parts of the North West, and the North-Eastern parts of the Free State as well.
