Free State police are investigating a case of murder after a traffic official fatally shot a knife-wielding taxi driver at the corner of St Georges and Harvey Road in Bloemfontein yesterday.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says it is alleged that a scuffle ensued between the taxi driver and the traffic officer, who was on duty at the time.

She says during the incident, the taxi driver allegedly fetched a knife from the taxi and tried to stab the traffic officer, who fired a shot that fatally wounded the driver around 15:40.

She adds that the knife was confiscated. Mbambo says subsequent to the incident cases of attempted murder and failure to obey traffic regulations are being investigated.

In a separate incident, a man armed with a knife was shot and arrested by the Port Nolloth police in the Northern Cape in the Namakwa region on Monday morning after a botched robbery.

Police spokesperson, Mohale Ramatseba, told OFM News that at about 6:00 the man and an accomplice, armed with knives, stormed a supermarket immediately after opening and demanded money from the staff.

He said during that time the safe could not open and the local police were alerted. Upon arrival, one of the robbers tried to stab a police officer.

He was shot in the shoulder. "The wounded suspect tried to flee but was arrested and is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard at the Springbok Hospital."

"The second man managed to flee the scene but the police have subsequently launched a manhunt," Ramatseba added.
