Conviction of Block, Scholtz highlighted during Anti-Corruption Day In FS | News Article

The 15-year jail terms of former Northern Cape MEC John Block and businessman Christo Scholtz on corruption charges have been highlighted as some of the successes in dealing with corruption within government sphere.

During the International Anti-Corruption Day held at Pacofs in Bloemfontein on Monday 9 December, the head of the National Public Prosecution (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), Willie Hofmeyer, says the cases of Block and Scholtz are examples that there has been a movement within his unit to deal with corruption.

During his detailed presentation, he highlighted that corruption within the government sphere has created massive problems in the country and has resulted in billions of rands being lost during these proceeds of crime.

He says although there has been action to deal with corruption within the government and private sector, much more needs to be done in order to deal with the scourge. This comes amidst evidence before the Zondo Commission on State Capture about how millions of rands were either stolen or siphoned off from government and how politicians, such as the former president Jacob Zuma and FS premier, Ace Magashule, and others are implicated.

Addressing hundreds of government officials and members of the public gathered at Pacofs, Hofmeyr further stated that more needs to be done to ensure that cases under investigation are fast-tracked. He adds that these include ensuring that law enforcement agencies are fully capacitated with human resources and ensuring that whistleblowers are protected. Hofmeyr highlighted that there is also a high need to ensure that those implicated in state capture not only get prosecuted but that there is no further looting. The event held at Pacofs saw Premier Sisi Ntombela, Treasury's MEC Gadija Brown and many other delegates speak against fraud and corruption in various spheres of government.
