Concerns over fraud, corruption in the spotlight in FS | News Article

The poor financial state of public entities and incomplete government projects are under scrutiny in the Free State.

This, as the province observes International Anti-corruption Day in Bloemfontein. The event held at Pacofs saw Premier Sisi Ntombela, Treasury's MEC Gadija Brown, and many other delegates speak against fraud and corruption in various spheres of government.

Amongst them was the NPA's Head of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, Willie Hofmeyr, who highlighted the importance of holding those implicated in state capture accountable. Hofmeyr alluded to how state-owned enterprises such as Eskom continue to plunge deeper into a financial crisis due to leaders who fail to follow procurement processes or uphold financial management measures. He alluded that accounting officers in various SOE's and government departments need to be held accountable and that there is a high need to have processes in place to ensure that those appointed in key positions not only meet the job requirements, but that they are people of high integrity.

Web: Addressing hundreds of government officials and members of the public gathered at Pacofs, Hofmeyr further stated that more needs to be done to ensure that cases under investigation are fast-tracked. This includes ensuring that law enforcement agencies are fully capacitated with human resources and ensuring that whistleblowers are protected.

Hofmeyr highlighted that there is also a high need to ensure that those implicated in state capture not only get prosecuted, but that there is no further looting.

The anti-corruption event held at Pacofs comes just weeks after the Free State made news over revelations at the Zondo Commission.
