State of FS municipality under scrutiny in Legislature | News Article

Free State municipalities’ escalating debt and the state of the infamous Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality are amongst the pressing issues expected to come in the spotlight in the Free State Legislature today.

This, as Members of the Provincial Legislature, are today expected to deliver their farewell speech for 2019, table various Committee reports and reply to oral questions.

The sitting of the House today comes just two days after Premier Sisi Ntombela embarked on a service delivery outreach programme in the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality amidst their water crisis. The municipality, which owes Eskom over R4.5 billion and its water board nearly R3 billion, has recently made news over lack of water supply to its residents due to decreased water levels at the Fika Patso Dam. Members of opposition parties in the provincial legislature have for months lambasted Ntombela and the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thembeni Nxangisa over the poor state of this municipality and others that are still under administration. The state of the Mangaung Metro Municipality, which has been downgraded by Moody’s Investors Services earlier this year is another municipality that has been of great concern in the province.
