Seven people in the Majemantsho village outside Mmabatho in the North West have been arrested for intimidation and extortion.

According to the police’s Sabata Mokgwabone, the arrests come after an intensive investigation into incidents in which provincial government officials were allegedly intimidated between September and October.

Mokgwabone says the suspects, aged between 31 and 53 and who claimed to be members of the Mahikeng Business Forum, allegedly stopped contractors from doing their work and in some instances, intimidated government officials. He says in one incident where a government official was in a meeting at the provincial Public Works Department, a group of people allegedly stormed in and howled at the official for the department’s alleged failure to award them with tenders. He says the group further allegedly threatened to shoot the official before leaving the office.

Web: “In another incident on 10 October 2019, the suspects again went to the Department of Public Works where they disrespectfully talked to the official about the awarding of tenders. The official, who was also threatened with death, was rescued by security officers,” said Mokgwabone.

He adds the group is expected to appear before the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
