Free State’s Kopanong by-elections in full swing | News Article

By-elections in the Kopanong Local Municipality in the Free State are in full swing. The municipality’s ward eight is today contested by four candidates, one from the ANC, DA, EFF and an independent candidate.

It was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of its councillor’s resignation. According to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the by-elections in this municipality coincide with the ones in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The IEC spokesperson in the Free State, Mmabatho Rasengane, says voting in the ward is underway and all measures have been put in place to ensure the smooth running of the by-elections and do not foresee any hiccups.

OFM News previously reported that this municipality recently made news over the suspension of its Municipal Manager, Martin Khubeka, over allegations of corruption and maladministration and that it is amongst the Free State municipalities that have over the years also made news over service delivery issues, non-payment of salaries and employees’ third party contributions.
