IEC geared up for FS by-elections─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 15:55 Wed, 09 Oct 2019
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa says it is all systems go for the by-elections set to take place in the Free State, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in two week’s time.
Free State IEC spokesperson, Mmabatho Rasengane, says the by-elections in the province will take place at the Kopanong Local Municipality. The municipality’s ward eight became vacant as a result of its councillor’s resignation. Parties set to contest these wards include the ANC, DA, EFF and an Independent Candidate. The by-elections in this financially troubled municipality come just over a month after the ones that were held in Maluti-A-Phofung where the ANC lost ten seats to independent candidates. Kopanong Municipality is amongst the Free State municipalities listed as distressed in a report recently presented by Finance MEC, Gadija Brown, before members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).
Web: During her presentation before members of the NCOP and Members of the Provincial Legislature, Brown listed this municipality, alongside Letsemeng, Masilonyana, Tokologo, Maluti-A-Phofung, Ngwathe, Mafube, and Mohokare as those highly distressed and needing to develop their recovery plans.
Rasengane has meanwhile told OFM News that registrations for the upcoming by-election went well and they are ready for October the 23rd.
