11 000 women raped annually in platinum belt - Doctors Without Borders | News Article

Doctors Without Borders says an estimated 11 000 women in the platinum belt in the North West are raped annually.

According to a survey conducted by the humanitarian organisation, one in five women has experienced a rape incident in her lifetime.

Doctors Without Borders’ Cecilia Lamola-Larufi says, “We have 11 000 women and girls who are raped in a year. And out of that, there were issues that were relating to the Gender-Based Violence part, where we found that 49% of them have experienced intimate partner violence.

“Some also have experienced physical violence and emotional violence,” adds Lamola-Larufi.
