Bloemfontein police reveal the unidentified man who was hit by a train on Monday (September 16) was lying on the tracks as the train approached.

This is in contradiction to accounts from residents on the ground alleging the deceased hurled himself in front of the oncoming goods train at Mckenzie Road near Heidedal.

Police spokesperson, Ikobeng Hlubi, says the train driver told police he saw the unidentified man lying on the Bloemfontein More Poort Railway when he hooted, but did not see any reaction or movement from the man.

She says the driver attempted to bring the train to a halt, but was unable to do so in time and ran the man over as a result. A culpable homicide case has been opened into the matter.

When the OFM News team arrived at the scene around midday, parts of the deceased’s body were still scattered throughout the area. Residents of an informal settlement located next to the tracks recall hearing the train hoot after 09:00 am in the morning.

Upon realising what may have occurred, they approached the gruesome scene, discovering the deceased’s body parts, including his swollen torso.

This is still a developing story.
