A Free State traffic officer has been arrested on allegations that he requested a motorist for a R500 bribe.

According to a media statement issued by the spokesperson of the Corporate Communications Department of Police, Roads, and Transport, Hillary Mophethe, the incident allegedly took place on the R64 road at Bloemfontein on Thursday 12 September 2019.

The officer called the motorist to the side of the road for overtaking on a barrier line, further requesting a sum of R500. The officer was later sent an e-wallet transfer of R500. After sending the money the motorist went to Bainsvlei Police Station to open a case against the officer.

The rapid response by the police led to the arrest of this 39-year-old male officer who was stationed at the Lengau Testing Centre at the time. The officer appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 13 September 2019, where he was granted R3 500 bail. He will again appear in court in October 2019.

The MEC for Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini, commends the police officers for their speedy reaction and arrest of the culprit.

“We are determined to fight corruption whenever and wherever it manifests, we hope the arrest of this officer will send a strong message to colleagues that corruption will not be tolerated on my watch,” said Mashinini.

Members of the public are hereby urged to report any acts of fraud and corruption to the department and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
