Minister considering renaming Goedemoed after victim─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:46 Fri, 30 Aug 2019
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, says he is considering to rename the Goedemoed Correctional Facility Centre after slain Nomsa Stuurman.
This as Lamola on Friday 30 August 2019 unveiled the wall of remembrance in honour of Stuurman and other women who died in the line of duty.
He says this consideration follows a serious discussion between him and the deputy minister, Nkosi Holomisa. He adds that although this has been suggested, serious paper will have to be done as it's just a suggestion for now.
Lamola was flanked by his deputy, Holomisa, and Free State/Northern Cape regional commissioner, Subhashini Moodley.
He said today's ceremony at the Goedemoed Correctional Facility took place under a very dark cloud, as they were are mourning the death of Stuurman and many other women who have been violated in our centres over the past 25 years.
He added that a maximum sentence should be introduced against the perpetrator who also raped Stuurman's colleague during the heinous crime in March 2019.
Lamola said the passing of Stuurman now calls on all officials to now, more than ever before, prioritise conditions of employment of female officials who face enormous challenges at centres across the country and in society.
