Former Oudtshoorn teacher in court for R1 million fraud─── 13:39 Fri, 16 Aug 2019
A former Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) teacher appeared in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court earlier this week for fraud involving almost R1 million.
The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson, Captain Philani Nkwalase, said Tasmyn Lynn Dorothy, 42, was arrested on Monday and made her first appearance at court the same day.
Nkwalase said it was alleged that between January 2010 and May 2013, Dorothy registered ghost teachers.
She worked as a teacher and a manager at different learning centres around Oudtshoorn.
Nkwalase said that Dorothy allegedly inflated the actual numbers of registered students in order to gain financial benefits from the Western Cape Department of Education.
Nkwalase said the department suffered a loss of R946 538.
The case was postponed until September 6.
Dorothy was released on bail of R2,500.
