The state of the National Hospital in Bloemfontein has once again come in the spotlight.

This as the hospital, which previously made news over infrastructure issues, a lack of resources, medication, and staff shortages, is now experiencing power cuts and flooding.

Power outages at the hospital have forced nurses, doctors, and other medical personnel to treat patients in the dark or resort to candlelight, while in other wards some have to do with flooded floors. The cause of the current situation at the hospital is at this stage unknown as the Provincial Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, is yet to respond to OFM News’ inquiry.

Back in January, the hospital was scrutinised over a similar situation where some wards were partially flooded after one of the water tanks located on the roof of the hospital cracked, resulting in a steady flow of water flowing into the building. Mvambi back then explained that the water tanks were big, carry about 20 000 litres of water and that contractors were attending to the crack on one of the tanks. He highlighted that the department was working on revitalising the hospital to improve the quality of the building.
