#FSbudget: ‘Salga must be part of Legislature’ | News Article

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) wants the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to be roped into the affairs of the Free State Legislature.

MEC for Cogta, Thembeni Ngxangisa, says this is to ensure that the legislature, as an oversight body, also benefits from the perspectives of organised local government.

He was tabling his 2019/20 budget vote speech in the provincial legislature on Thursday 11, July 2019 at 4th Raadsaal in Bloemfontein. This as a large number of municipalities in the province are facing serious issues of fraud and maladministration with many of them being criticised for not doing enough to deliver basic quality service delivery. Ngxangisa says Salga’s Municipal Audit Support Programme requires undivided attention and support.

He says the participation of Salga is necessary and important if they are to turn things around in the important local sphere of government. He further says the department will be supporting the Salga-initiated Karoo Development Programme whose conference will be held in the month of October in the province. He adds that the Xhariep District will host the conference and the theme will be around the plight to grow the economy together.

Ngxangisa further informed the Legislature that all senior officials in municipalities that fail to adhere to the binding recommendations of the Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu, will face serious consequences.
