NC police warn communities after drowning | News Article

The police in the Northern Cape are appealing to the community of Hartswater to be cautious around swimming pools, rivers and water canals during school holidays.

This, after the police opened an inquest into the death of a 3-year-old boy after he drowned in a canal at the Riemvasmaak Shanties in Hartswater. Police spokesperson, Sergio Kock, says it is alleged that the boy and his 10-year-old cousin was playing close to the canal when the 10-year-old boy suddenly ran for help and the police were contacted over a possible drowning incident. He says it remains unclear whether the boy jumped or slipped into the canal, which allegedly caused him to drown. Kock urges parents to be cautious at all times and ensure that they know the whereabouts of their children.

Web: He, in a statement, adds that parents also need to educate children on the dangers and safety of being in and around water and that they must empty paddling pools, bathtubs or water containers after use, as children might get enticed to play in the water.
