Northern Cape police confirm no foul play is suspected in the drowning of a three-year-old boy in Hartswater this week.
On Monday afternoon, the deceased and his 10-year-old cousin were reportedly playing close to the canal at the Riemvasmaak settlement in the area. Police spokesperson, Sergio Kock, tells OFM News it isn’t clear whether the three-year-old slipped or jumped through the canal. Kock says the older boy ran for help and the police were contacted for assistance. According to the police, some of the three-year-old boy’s next family have been notified regarding the incident.
Kock says the investigation into the incident continues and anyone with additional information should contact the local police.
The police have, as a result of the incident, issued a warning to parents during this holiday period. Kock says people should not walk closely to a dam, canals, dams, rivers and swamps and parents should ensure they know where their children are. Police say people who don’t know how to swim should refrain from jumping into water to assist someone who is drowning, rather ask for help, concludes the spokesperson.
