Job Mokgoro's nomination as premier means a certain group is happy | News Article

The selection of Job Mokgoro as the North West premier is well received in the province, but it means that there is only a certain grouping that is celebrating.

This is according to former Dr Kenneth Kaunda regional ANC Secretary General, Lopang Rothman, who says this in light of the tripartite alliance, which includes the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), submitted that Mokgoro must be given the post again because the province is still in a fragile state - and unity and cohesion is still necessary under his leadership.

Making the announcement after the ANC National Executive Committee, the party’s Secretary General, Ace Magashule, said amongst reasons that led to the nomination of Mokgoro again was the need for unity in the province. This as he says infighting and deepening factions within the party in the province threatens the unity and the prosperity of the province.  Rothman says despite various views, they respect the wishes of the party.

Following the general elections, the party had last week announced seven premier candidates for the provinces it will continue to govern, holding back on a decision on the province where Mokgoro had been parachuted in mid-2018, to replace Supra Mahumapelo who resigned after weeks of violent community protests over alleged corruption and a lack of service delivery.

Magashule said: "We looked at the different proposals. There were people to be considered but those people were not on the list of the ANC and we, therefore, agreed that comrade Job Mokgoro should remain Premier of the North West so that we stabilise that province and at the right time, I think, we will then interact on that matter."
