A number of schools in the Free State remain closed following localised floods that also saw hundreds of residents being evacuated from their homes in Bronville, Welkom.

Premier Sisi Ntombela has declared Bronville as a disaster area after more than 140 people were affected and had to be moved to places of safety where the provincial government is assisting with basic necessities such as food and blankets.

Matjhabeng Mayor, Nkosinjani Speelman, has meanwhile, confirmed that the areas of Thabong in Welkom, Virginia, Allanridge and Ventersburg are amongst those affected by the heavy downpours. He says the municipality has appealed to the Schools' Governing Bodies to close schools for the next few days for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, emergency services officials across the country are dealing with several disasters due to the heavy rainfall of the last few days.

This, after hundreds of families in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have this week also been evacuated to places of safety due to flooding.

Schools and businesses in Durban and Port St Johns have been severely affected. The floods in the two coastal provinces have thus far seen the death toll rise to more than 60.
