Sixth suspect in N1 stock-theft shoot-out arrested | News Article

Bloemfontein police have managed to arrest the sixth suspect in connection with Monday morning’s stock-theft drama that escalated into an N1 shoot-out.

Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, tells OFM News that a 42-year-old man was arrested in Phase 10 on Tuesday 9 April , following an extensive search. The sixth suspect is alleged to be a former police officer, however, this is yet to be verified. Covane confirms that a gun and ammunition were found and confiscated at the location in question. The 42-year-old has allegedly been the driver of the Ford Ikon that was intercepted by police on the N8 on Monday, just after 04:00, transporting seven pigs, allegedly stolen from a Petrusburg farm, inside the boot.

The driver of the Ford Ikon, which is believed to belong to the Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport, is reported to have sped off after being spotted by police, resulting in a police chase which came to a head on the N1. The suspect lost control on the road and ended up caught in the bushes dividing the lanes. A shoot-out between him and the police broke out shortly thereafter with the 42-year-old managing to flee the scene, leaving three of his accomplices behind.

Covane previously said the three men, between the ages of 35 and 40, then led police to their alleged crime partners in a silver VW Polo stranded on the N8, due to an empty fuel tank. Two more men were found in the Polo and arrested. One of these two men is a detective in Bloemfontein. The Polo suspects did not have pigs with them as they had been alerted to free the stolen stock. It is believed they were alerted by the sixth suspect and driver of the Ikon.

Covane says the men are facing charges of possession of presumably stolen property and attempted murder. The OFM News team was at the scene of the incident as police were wrapping up their investigations into the matter on Monday morning. The suspects are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
