FS municipality clears refuse removal backlog following week-long impasse over landfill | News Article

The Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State is making progress in clearing its refuse removal backlog after the municipality and residents reached an impasse over a landfill site in Kroonstad last week.

Moqhaka Spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, tells OFM News they are up to date with removal of garbage and are now back on schedule.

Since Wednesday March 13, community members residing close to the Maokeng landfill site barricaded roads leading to the area and stoned refuse removal vehicles travelling in the direction of the dump.

According to Kheswa, residents alleged the site is not being properly maintained and now poses a serious health risk to the community living near it.

The progress comes after a meeting was arranged so that residents could express their concerns to the Moqhaka Mayor.

The spokesperson has yet to provide comment on whether or not the municipality had made/was planning to make changes to the site, to quell the health concerns.

The Mayor, Matshidiso ‘Tshidi’ Koloi, is believed to have met with residents regarding the landfill.

This is not the first time in 2019, that garbage has been piling up in the streets of the municipality, which includes the towns of  Kroonstad, Steynsrus and Viljoenskroon.

In January a notice was issued informing residents that a shortage of refuse removal vehicles had left the municipality in a bit of a predicament.
