Moqhaka municipality and residents reach impasse over landfill site | News Article

The Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State is again facing a refuse removal backlog, this time at the hands of disgruntled residents.

Moqhaka Spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, tells OFM News that since Wednesday, March 13 garbage in the Kroonstad and Maokeng area has been steadily piling up since community members residing close to the Maokeng landfill site barricaded roads leading to the area and stoned refuse removal vehicles travelling in the direction of the dump. According to Kheswa, residents allege the site is not being properly maintained and now poses a serious health risk to the community living near it.

He announces that they anticipate that the municipality will be back on schedule with refuse removal on Tuesday, March 26. The Municipality has arranged for the disgruntled members to engage with the Mayor, Matshidiso ‘Tshidi’ Koloi this week. Kheswa is optimistic, that after the community raises their concerns with Koloi, the municipality will be able to continue with removal of garbage.

This is not the first time in 2019, that garbage has been piling up in the streets of the municipality which includes the Kroonstad, Steynsrus and Viljoenskroon. In January a notice was issued informing residents that a shortage of refuse removal vehicles had left the municipality in a bit of a predicament.
