Nine-year-old child missing in flooded Batho | News Article

A rescue team is in Bloemfontein’s Batho township where a nine-year-old child is said to be missing following the flash floods caused by heavy rains in the area.

OFM News has it on good authority that police divers are on the scene and began a frantic search for her at about 18h00 on Friday.

The spokesperson at the Emergency Medical Services in the Free State, Sipho Towa, confirmed to OFM News that earlier on, a ten-year-old, believed to be the missing girl’s sibling, was also rescued at the canal, which is in Batho’s Maphisa road.

“The ten-year-old boy was recovered and taken to Pelonomi Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention," Towa said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson at the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Qondile Khedama, could not confirm the incident as he said he was still trying to establish the facts of this matter. In a statement issued earlier on Friday, the Municipality had listed an intersection in Batho as one of the areas pedestrians and motorists should avoid owing to these floods.

The metro’s various departments remain on high alert as the night progresses to prevent further incidents and mitigate the risks these floods may pose to residents in the area.

This is a developing story.
