Sol Plaatje ANC ward councillor released from custody─── 14:14 Fri, 15 Feb 2019
A Sol Plaatje ANC ward councillor has been released from custody following his arrest on Tuesday, on charges of abduction, rape of a 14 year old girl with a disability and the attempted rape of another young woman.
The complainants were allegedly locked inside a house in Lerato Park over the weekend, where they were only released after a few days.
Supporters who are convinced of the innocence of the councillor, carried him on their shoulders following his release on Thursday, as the docket had not been finalised by the time the 48 hour incarceration period had lapsed.
The state, said that the suspect could be re-arrested and charged once the docket is ready to be presented to court.
Members from Disabled South Africa, Disabled Children Action Group in the Northern Cape and Rise Abafazi Movement picketed outside the court building, in support of the two young girls and their families.
ANC Francis Baard regional secretary Webster Dichaba stated that an internal investigation would be conducted into the allegations, while the councillor would remain in his position for now.
