Mangaung yet to fill vacant CFO position | News Article

The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in the Free State is left with a mere three months to fill the position of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), which has been vacant since March last year after the former CFO, Ernest Mohlahlo, resigned.

According to the Executive Mayor at the municipality, Olly Mlamleli, for the first six months following Mohlahlo’s exit, the municipality’s Steve Rapulungoane was placed to act in the position for about three months and was requested to act again for a further three months. Mlamleli said for the remainder of the next three months, the metro will now have to find a new person to act.

“We are in the process of appointing, the interviews are ongoing and so forth. So, if we as the Mangaung Metro do not appoint someone within these three months, the minister (of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Zweli Mkhize), will step in. That’s the Municipal Systems Act, it’s guiding us in this process and I hope we as the municipality will appoint the CFO,” Mlamleli said.

It will now be up to the selection panel which was appointed by the Municipal Council last year to make a suitable replacement for Mohlahlo, who came with the required qualifications and had a proven track record. As it stands, the panel consists of the metro’s City Manager, Advocate Tankiso Mea, as well as the Member of the Mayoral Council for Finance, Lulama Titi-Odili, the Director General of the Free State Provincial Government, Kopung Ralikontsane, as well as the Head of the Department at the Provincial Treasury, Godfrey Mahlatsi.

Mlamleli further stated that she hopes those responsible for this appointment will choose a capable candidate with a proven track record and outstanding thinking abilities, which will be used to move the metro forward. She, however, remained tightlipped on whether the metro headhunted any candidates or has decided on anyone yet as well as when exactly the placement will be made.
