First of four #HoërskoolDriehoek funerals held today─── MOLEBOGENG MALEBO 14:53 Thu, 07 Feb 2019
The first of four learners who tragically lost their lives in the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy has been laid to rest today (on Thursday).
A walkway, connecting two of the school’s buildings, collapsed while learners were making their way back to class after assembly last Friday, 1 February. The 14-year-old Jandré Steyn was buried this morning after a service held at the River of Life Family Church in Vanderbijlpark. Steyn, 17-year-old Roydon Olckers, and 13-year-old Marli Currie succumbed to their injuries on the scene. A number of learners sustained critical injuries and are reportedly recovering in various hospitals across Gauteng.
The 16-year-old Marnus Nagel passed away on Sunday 3 February after succumbing to his injuries. Chairperson of the Hoërskool Driehoek School Governing Body, Jacques Marx, confirmed to OFM News that Nagel will also be buried tomorrow.
“The first funeral, for Jandré, was held this morning and it has been concluded. Marnus’ funeral will be tomorrow, but the family asked for a private ceremony and the burial will also happen on a farm outside Vanderbijlpark,” said Marx.
Meanwhile, classes at the school were suspended. The Education department’s Steve Mabona says the resolution was taken at a meeting with parents on Tuesday.
"We can confirm that the school will resume on Monday next week, just to take the learners through reintegration of the schooling environment. You will understand that these learners still need counselling,”
