FS Education concludes #Koffiefontein learners must write exams - PODCAST | News Article

Grade 4 to 11 learners in Koffiefontein, who were affected by the shutdown of schools due to protests last year, must all write examinations. This is according to the Free State Department of Education.

The department has resolved to schedule exams for learners in these grades at the end of the month before any of the 2019 academic work could commence. This, despite dissatisfaction expressed by parents at the Koffiefontein Combined School during a meeting with the department’s officials yesterday. Department’s spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, told OFM News that the Schools Based Assessment (SBA), commonly known as the year mark, cannot be used in all grades to progress learners to the next class as it only amounts to certain percentages in the different grades. Ndaba, says they have noted the concerns raised by the parents regarding prolonged hours and pressure the learners will be subjected to, among other things, but maintains learners will have to write exams.

Ndaba has confirmed that the schedule that has been drawn up after learners practically missed the 4th term’s work following protests that heightened in October, is very tight and will require all the learners and teachers to work under immense pressure within a short period of time.

He highlights that grade 1-3 learners will not write exams because according to their policy their SBA counts to 100% and they are not compelled to write exams, while it counts 75% in grade 4-6, 60% in grade 7-9, and only 25% for grade 10-11.

He, however, alludes that they will all be provided with psycho-social support.

Ndaba says once exams have been written, marks have been finalised, reports issued, and 2019 academic work kicked-off, they are certain the learners in Koffiefontein will be on par with the rest of the country.

Exams are expected to start at the end of the month.
