Parliament appeals for smooth registrations and 2019 academic year | News Article

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training is appealing for a smooth and peaceful 2019 academic year. This, as students continue to flock to various institutions of higher learning to secure space and register for this academic year.

The committee’s chairperson, Connie September, says free education at tertiary level must benefit the poor and the working class and has called on student leaders and SRCs at various campuses to ensure that this becomes a reality for most students and that institutions realise a smooth and successful registration period. OFM News earlier reported that hundreds of first-time students, accompanied by parents and guardians, have since the early hours of the morning been queuing at the Motheo TVET College in Bloemfontein to receive confirmation as to whether or not they had been accepted to study at the institution.

Many told OFM News that they are hopeful they will be accepted. September has further urged universities to prioritise challenges faced by students ahead of the new academic year.

The Department of Higher Education and Training has also urged students throughout the country to make use of universities’ online registration platforms as a means to fast-track the process and avoid stampedes.

The plea from both parliament and the department comes amidst the ‘national shutdown’ at the University of South Africa (Unisa) called by its Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC bodies at various Unisa campuses have stated that the shutdown is to highlight the plight faced by students that are financially excluded from accessing higher education, and calls for NSFAS services to improve.
