What is new in Farmer’s Weekly? | News Article

AND… In our Friday insert, only on Before Dawn, OFM News’ Christal-Lize Muller speaks to acting editor of Farmer’s Weekly, Janine Ryan, about what to expect in their latest edition of the magazine…

Serious damage because of fall armyworm infestations in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal is highlighted in the magazine’s news section. She says the fall armyworm has been known to cause severe damage to crops and feed on more than 80 species of plants, and while they are known to feed on maize, these worms feed on a whole range of other crops.

There is a news story about the recent good rainfall across South Africa which is widely welcomed, but it has also come with a few challenges. These include the increase in the number of mosquitos that transmit rift valley fever. Livestock farmers are now being urged to vaccinate their animals against the disease.

In another news story the transportation of fruit for export purposes in high cube containers which have now become illegal, is highlighted. The illegal transportation is because the department of transport neglected to sign a moratorium to prevent a ban on these containers which exceed 4.3 meters in height. Ryan says these containers are no longer allowed.
