Great concern over low dam levels in Eastern Cape, Central SA | News Article

The Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation’s latest report on the state of dam levels in the country shows a drop in levels in the Eastern Cape, Free State and some parts of Limpopo.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson of the department, says it is estimated that the Eastern Cape’s dam levels are at 48,3%. This is a drop of 13% compared to the same period last year. Ratau says following this, Minister Lindiwe Sisulu met with the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, this week to discuss a complete approach to deal with the water crisis in affected towns. Butterworth and Queenstown are among the worst-hit towns.

He says the Eastern Cape was already declared a drought disaster area and with this declaration the National Disaster Management Centre will be able to assist in financial aid, but also in terms of human capacity through technical assistance by people. Municipalities, however, have to come to light in terms of maintenance and infrastructure management.

Ratau also stresses the importance of good working relations between government and the farming community to reduce the demand from water resources across the country.
