The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) is deeply concerned about the arrival of the Al Shuwaikh vessel in South African waters, docking outside the East London Harbour to load a consignment of 60 000 sheep destined for the Middle East.

Animal safety unit manager at the NSPCA, Grace de Lange, says there are confirmed high-risk areas for heat stress on the route. High temperatures render sheep incapable of regulating their body temperatures and evidence has shown that during the voyages between May and October, the combined heat and humidity can reach high levels causing the sheep to suffer from heatstroke, which results in the animals basically being cooked alive.

She says Al Mawashi, a Kuwait importer, has registered a business in South Africa and uses the Page Farming Trust to acquire sheep from across the country. This trust is also responsible for loading the sheep onto the cargo ship. The NSPCA is still awaiting a response from the government, with whom they have been working regarding the issue.
