National Minimum Wage makes new demands on employers, also offers relief

National Minimum Wage makes new demands on employers, also offers relief | News Article

The new National Minimum Wage has established a minimum national rate of R20 per hour, with the minimum rate for farmworkers now at R18 an hour while domestic workers will earn R15 an hour.

This is according to Jetro Malapane, executive committee member of the South African Payroll Association.

Although the government expects employers to comply with these new minimum levels, there is some relief for employers who can apply for an exemption with the Department of Labour.

Malapane suggests that, if employers feel they cannot afford the new rates, they should apply for exemption, via the Department of Labour, through the National Minimum Wage online service.

Altogether the department has received more than 300 exemptions.

More than 240 exemptions were granted while only 102 were declined. Two exemptions were revoked, one due to fraud, the other one due to misrepresentation.
