SA consumer inflation eases to 4.1%─── 12:36 Wed, 23 Oct 2019
South Africa's headline consumer price index eased to 4.1% year-on-year in September from 4.3% in August, the national statistics agency said on Wednesday.
On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices were up 0.3% in September, Statistics South Africa said in a report.
"The main contributors to the 4.1% annual inflation rate were food and non-alcoholic beverages; housing and utilities; and miscellaneous goods and services," it said.
The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 3.9% in September compared with the same month last year and contributed 0.7 percentage points to the overall CPI rate, while housing and utilities were up 4.8%, contributing 1.2 percentage points.
Miscellaneous goods and services increased by 5.7% year-on-year and accounted for 0.9 percentage points of the overall number.
Stats SA said the main contributor to the monthly rise in the consumer price index was housing and utilities, which increased by 0.4% and contributed 0.1 percentage points.
Provincial annual inflation rates ranged from 3.6% in North West to 4.8% in Limpopo, the statistics agency said.
