The MECs for Agriculture and Cooperative Governance in the Free State are currently locked in a meeting with officials from the provincial Umbrella Fire Protection Association following damaging wildfires in the province.

The meeting between MECs William Bulwane, Thembeni Nxangisa and the members of the association is taking place a few kilometres outside of Bloemfontein along the N1 road. This after the veldfires swept across Petrusburg and Jagersfontein in the Letsemeng Local Municipality, and Soutpan in the Masilonyana Local Municipality, amongst others. It's understood that farmers are currently carrying out the mop-up operations followiing the fire.

Meanwhile, OFM News previously reported that the association's spokesperson, Johan Savage, said a few flare-ups occurred throughout the morning but all was contained. Currently there are a few small active fires within the affected area.

"Mop-up operations have commenced on the left flank and the fire weather is diminishing, as expected, into the evening. The fire perimeter has not expanded and a recon flight is scheduled for the afternoon to asses the current situation," Savage adds.

This is a developing story.
